What is Khata billing?

Khata billing (from the Hindi बही-खाता, “ledger”) is an informal pay-later or credit system where a trusted customer runs a running tab and settles later, instead of paying after every visit. Snooker and gaming clubs across India use Khata to keep regulars loyal — recording each charge and repayment against the customer’s balance.

How Khata works

Instead of collecting payment after every session, a trusted regular's charges are added to their Khata (tab). They settle the balance later — weekly, monthly, or whenever they choose. Each game, canteen order and repayment is recorded against their running balance.

Khata vs cash / UPI

Cash and UPI are paid on the spot. Khata is pay-later — it builds loyalty with regulars who don't want to settle every visit, but it needs tracking so dues don't pile up. The healthiest clubs offer Khata to trusted customers with a sensible credit limit.

FAQ

Khata billing — common questions

Is Khata the same as credit? +

Essentially yes — Khata is an informal credit or pay-later arrangement, traditionally tracked in a ledger book (bahi-khata). The customer plays now and pays later, and you record what they owe.

How do I stop Khata dues from piling up? +

Set a credit limit per customer so a tab can’t grow indefinitely, review balances regularly, and send gentle reminders. CueBill enforces per-customer limits and shows every outstanding balance at a glance.

Can I send Khata reminders on WhatsApp? +

Yes. With CueBill you can send a balance/due reminder to a customer’s WhatsApp in one tap — friendlier and faster than a phone call.

Does CueBill track Khata automatically? +

Yes. Every charge, repayment and advance is recorded in the customer’s ledger with a running balance, so Khata is accurate without a paper register.
